Forwarded on behalf of the Brookings Institution.

Dear Friend:

As some of you may already know, John Austin, former director of the
Brookings Institution's Great Lakes Economic Initiative (GLEI), has been
reappointed to the position, effective April 1, 2009. John, who will
continue to reside in Ann Arbor, will work alongside Brookings fellow
Jennifer Vey to help shape the future of the Initiative.

For the past year John has been heading the New Economy Initiative for
Southeast Michigan (NEI), and has worked to get that important philanthropic
effort off the ground. NEI is generously supporting John's work with
Brookings and our partners in the Great Lakes region to identify and tackle
regional and federal policy challenges, and transform the area's economy.

We are delighted to have John re-join the Brookings team, and look forward
to our continued engagement with you on this important regional effort. If
you'd like to congratulate John or want to share your thoughts on the future
priorities of the GLEI, please feel free to email him at jcaustin at umich.edu.

Also - we think you'll be interested in this new piece by Brookings Fellow
Howard Wial in which he argues that President Obama's plan for transforming
the auto industry doesn't go far enough:
