On April 16, 2009, NASA's TERRA satellite had a good view of the lower Great Lakes, and the Moderate Imaging Resolution Spectrophotometer (MODIS) aboard TERRA gathered some interesting imagery. Phytoplankton formed in the discharge of the Saginaw River to Saginaw Bay are apparent, as well as phytoplankton found in offstore waters on Michigan's thumb NW shore areas in the Bay. Both phytoplankton and solid particle (browner areas) pollution evident in the Ontario waters of extreme SE lower Lake Huron. Western Ontario, Michigan, Ohio transboundary region http://www.sagady.com/nasa/ohmiwestontariotransbound04162009.jpg Phytoplankton in nearer shore waters of Lake Michigan from Berrien County to near the Illinois-Indiana line. Lake St. Clair is a phytoplankton-brown turbidity ying yang. Brown turbidity from a prior precipitation river turbidity event that was discharged to the lake flows through the Straight of Detroit through the Detroit River to pollute western Lake Erie south of the mouth of the Detroit River. http://www.sagady.com/nasa/lkstclairtightshot04162009.jpg http://www.sagady.com/nasa/straightofdetroit04162009.jpg Brown turbid waters from the Maumee River and Sandusky Bay cause western Lake Erie turbidity. Considerable phytoplankton evident throughout western Lake Erie. http://www.sagady.com/nasa/westlakeerie04162009.jpg Possible phytoplankton outbreak in the north tip of the middle finger lake in NY. ========================================== Alex J.
