******************************************************************** Dear Colleagues, The 2010 Ocean Sciences Meeting is being held February 22-26 in Portland, Oregon. Over 180 sessions are planned around the theme "From Observation to Prediction in the 21^st Century". Meeting details are at http://www.agu.org/meetings/os10/. Three complementary sessions on Oceans and Human Health are scheduled and we would like to invite you to participate by presenting either a talk or poster on your current work. The three sessions are: IT57: "Oceans and Human Health I: Identifying and Understanding Ocean Health Benefits and Threats". This session will highlight progress in basic research, particularly 1) discovery and understanding of ocean health benefits derived from seafood, identification and characterization of marine pharmaceuticals and natural products, and the use of marine organisms as models for biomedical research, 2) understanding, tracking and predicting ocean heath threats (e.g. pathogens, chemical pollutants), and the processes that drive human exposure to these health threats, and 3) impacts of climate variation on ocean-related threats to human health. A description of the session can be found at http://www.agu.org/meetings/os10/program/scientific_session_search.php?s how=detail&sessid=218. IT58: "Oceans and Human Health II: Reducing Risks Through Prediction". This session invites papers that help re-focus research on prediction rather than explanation, or which report discoveries that can help improve forecasting and modelling efforts of all types of human health risks. Case studies and successful examples of the use and application of basic research results to policy, planning, and management efforts aimed at reducing human health risk are welcome as well as papers that explore our ability to predict oceanographic/coastal conditions (e.g. beach quality, pathogen dispersal, seafood contamination, sediment contamination using models or other means. A description of the session can be found at http://www.agu.org/meetings/os10/program/scientific_session_search.php?s how=detail&sessid=234. IT59: "Oceans and Human Health III: Predicting Harmful Algal Blooms". This session will feature papers on any aspect of HAB forecasting and prediction in any ecosystem. In particular, this session will highlight requirements for predictive models, development, testing and validation of harmful algal bloom hindcasts or forecasts, and examples of successes and challenges in the development of regional monitoring, forecasting, and response systems. A description of the session can be found at http://www.agu.org/meetings/os10/program/scientific_session_search.php?s how=detail&sessid=235. Abstracts are due on-line by October 15, 2009. Feel free to contact one of us if you need more information about these sessions. We hope to see you in Portland!
