Great Ships Initiative Land-Based Test

of Ballast Treatment System to Commence

The Great Ships Initiative will commence testing of a proposed ballast
treatment system developed by the Siemens Corporation this week. The
Siemens team indicated that it made significant modifications to the
treatment method following testing at the Marine Environmental
Research Center in Maryland earlier this summer.

The method employs electrolytic chlorination and filtration. Ballast
treatment testing at the land-based scale provides important
opportunities for designers of treatment systems to refine their
methods for achieving ballast treatment requirements, as well
validating their ability to do so under challenging conditions.

Illinois River System Management Conference

The 12th Biennial Governor's Conference on the Management of the
Illinois River System will be held at the Hotel Pere Marquette, 501
Main Street, Peoria, Illinois, from October 20-22.

Over the past 24 years, the Governor's Conferences on the Management
of the Illinois River System have served as an important forum to
bring together local, state, and federal leaders to create awareness
of the issues of soil erosion and sedimentation, identify important
river research initiatives, develop working coalitions, apply
conservation practices to the watershed, prepare new river and
watershed legislation, and provide for state and federal funding to
address the issues of the Illinois River System.

The deadline for early registration discount is September 30. For

Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference

The 2009 Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference will be held at the
Hilton Hotel, 700 East Adams Street, Springfield, Illinois, on
December 6-9.

The purpose of the conference is to share new research, management
experiences, and valuable insight on fish and wildlife issues.
Conference organizers say that it is the "premier fish and wildlife
conference in the central U.S., with more than 1,000 attendees at past
conferences." For additional conference information, or to register,

Rep. Michael Turner to Hold Housing Field Hearing in Dayton

Co-Chair of the Revitalizing Older Cities Task Force, Rep. Michael
Turner (R-OH), is working jointly with the Northeast-Midwest Institute
to convene a forum in Dayton, Ohio, on the impact of the housing
crisis on local communities, and the federal response to this crisis.
The hearing will be held on August 26, from 8:30 AM until Noon, at the
Montgomery County Administration Building, 451 West Third Street.

The hearing will consist of two panels: Miami Valley leaders who will
discuss the effects of the housing crisis on the region, and a second
composed of federal policy experts who will discuss the federal
responses to this crisis.
