NEMWLogo Weekly Update 20 July 2009 * Funding for HUD Brownfields Programs Restored * Upper Mississippi River Basin Association Meeting * Visions of a Sustainable Mississippi River Conference Funding for HUD Brownfields Programs Restored The House Transportation-HUD Appropriations Subcommittee allocated $25 million to the Brownfields Economic Development Initiative (BEDI) program, and $6 million to HUD Section 108. After the Obama Administration's budget "zeroed" both programs, the National Brownfields Coalition wrote letters to the respective House <http://www.nemw.org/images/HUD%20brownfields%20budget%20follow-up%20l tr%20house.pdf> and Senate <http://www.nemw.org/images/HUD%20brownfields%20budget%20follow-up%20l tr%20senate.pdf> appropriations committees. The letters call attention to the unique role these programs play in financing large scale redevelopment projects, including site preparation not funded by the EPA Brownfields Program. The $25 million for the BEDI Program brings the program back to the level of funding typical of the years 2002-2005. The conference will have four focus areas: * ecosystem services and economic value; * flood plain connectivity, flood control and hydrologic regime; * ethanol production, and * clean water uses and threats. The conference will include a session, "Policy Forum: Presentations to Elected Officials and Other Decision Makers," on the last morning of the conference. The goal of that session is to summarize the proceedings of the conference, and present key policy issues to an audience of elected officials and other decision makers governing the Mississippi River basin.
