Briefing: Manufacturing a Better Future for America

The Senate Task Force on Manufacturing is holding a briefing with the
Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) on Monday, July 27, at 11:00
AM in room 428-A of the Russell Senate Office Building - the Senate
Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship Hearing Room. The
briefing will include presentations from industry experts about the
challenges faced by U.S. manufacturers and the need to revitalize our
manufacturing base.

AAM recently published a new book entitled Manufacturing a Better
Future for America, written by leading academic and industry experts.
The book outlines why manufacturing is vital to the U.S. economy, and
provides objective information and analysis. Topics include the
current state of U.S.-based producers and industry trends, the history
of U.S. trade and industrial policies, analysis of other countries'
trade practices, and the impact of these changes on workers, society,
training, research, and defense.

The AAM executive director, and two of the book's authors, will make
brief presentations and field questions:

. Richard McCormack, Editor and Publisher of Manufacturing
<http://www.manufacturingnews.com/>  & Technology News;

. Clyde Prestowitz, Founder and President of the Economic
<http://www.econstrat.org/> Strategy Institute; and

. Scott Paul, Executive Director of the Alliance

and Chesapeake Bay Ballast Test Facilities

On August 20-21, representatives of the German government visited the
Northeast-Midwest Institute's Great Ships Initiative (GSI) ballast
treatment test facility and the Maryland-based Maritime Environmental
Resource Center (MERC). The German government is considering
accepting data from the two facilities to help determine if the
treatments can meet International Maritime Organization standards.
Both GSI and MERC will make themselves available to measure treatment
performance against domestic standards once they are promulgated.

natural resource professionals." The conference will have four focus

*	clean water uses and threats.

The conference will include a session, "Policy Forum: Presentations
