>From Mackinaw to Manitou, Great Lakes Islands are still charming, mysterious hosts to unique environments. The Great Lakes Islands Symposium of 2009, scheduled for Aug. 28-30 on Beaver Island will explore the history, ecology and importance of maintaining the islands. Here's a chance to be a part of it.

"The Symposium promises to be highly interesting and informative," said Mark Breederland, Northwest Michigan Sea Grant Extension Educator. "We've got great field trips and presentations planned. The fact that it's being held on Beaver Island - well, what a great excuse to explore exactly what we'll be talking about. I know travel budgets are tight, but this one will be worth it."

The islands of the Great Lakes contain many critical natural features, cultural resources and recreational opportunities that, despite being threatened by pressures of unplanned development and habitat destruction, have yet to be holistically addressed. There are more than 30,000 islands within the Great Lakes - some considered among the last wildlands in the region.

The conference will focus on:
- Understanding the unique biodiversity found on Great Lakes islands
- Threats to islands and necessary protection measures
- Setting up a framework for building island alliances

Speakers from international groups will offer different perspectives on islands throughout the region. For example, representatives from the Sovereign Nation of Walpole Island, Canada will present information on their attempts to preserve and restore First Nation island holdings. Gail Jackson from the north shore of Lake Superior will discuss her success in placing 1,000 islands in a conservation protection zone. Historical and cultural stories of island life as well as fieldtrips to bays and wetlands will be interspersed with the discussions.

Registration is limited. The conference fee is $100 per individual and includes a $25 travel voucher to get to and from the island. Early registration ends Aug. 2.

"We must go beyond textbooks, go out into the bypaths and untrodden depths of the wilderness and travel and explore and tell the world the glories of our journey."
