One of the keys to our nation's economic recovery will be to restore one of Ohio's most important natural and economic resources, Lake Erie. Roughly three million Ohioans depend on Lake Erie for their drinking water. Millions more benefit from the commerce and businesses dependant on Lake Erie and our national treasure, the Great Lakes. Right now, the health of our Great Lakes is seriously threatened by problems such as untreated sewage and invasive species. Unless America commits to investing in the Great Lakes, these problems will get worse as the price we pay gets higher. A recent Brookings Institution report concluded that restoring the health of the Great Lakes will generate $50 billion in the region and $2 billion in Greater Cleveland through new jobs, industrial development, and increased property values. This summer, the Healing Our Waters(r)-Great Lakes Coalition, in partnership with the Brookings Institute, will host several forums around the Great Lakes region. These forums will educate citizens, lawmakers, and community leaders on how restoring the Great Lakes is essential to revitalizing our economy and creating vibrant, sustainable communities in Ohio and the nation.
