"We must go beyond textbooks, go out into the bypaths and untrodden depths of the wilderness and travel and explore and tell the world the glories of our journey." - John Hope Franklin, historian

Get out and reach those untrodden depths: sign up for the Great Lakes Islands Symposium of 2009, Aug. 28-30 at the Central Michigan University Biological Station on Beaver Island.

It was the unique populations within the Galapagos Islands that first set Darwin's mind to thinking. Great Lakes islands are significant in a similar way because they are home to species that are found in no other places in the world. There are more than 30,000 islands within the Great Lakes - some considered among the last wildlands in the region. These islands contain many critical natural features, cultural resources and recreational opportunities that, despite being threatened by pressures of unplanned development and habitat destruction, have yet to be holistically addressed.

The symposium will focus on:
- Understanding this uniqueness,
- Threats to islands and necessary protection measures
- Setting up a framework for building island alliances

Native American stories of island life as well as fieldtrips to bays and wetlands will be interspersed with discussions, presentations and networking opportunities. To see the agenda, visit: http://www.miseagrant.umich.edu/workshops/glislands2009/agenda.html

Registration is limited and closes on Aug. 2. The conference fee is $100 per individual and includes a $25 travel voucher to get to and from the island.
