SHIPPING SEASON UPDATE The Great Lakes marine traffic line-up changed slightly over the weekend (Friday's press release attached)... It now appears that the 2009 Great Lakes navigation season will start TODAY - Monday, March 30 - with a late afternoon arrival of the Port's 1st Laker - the Alpena - through the Duluth Entry on her way to Lafarge North America, Superior. She's traveled from Alpena, Michigan through the Soo Locks to get here. Allowing for ice conditions & travel time, the dock expects an approximate 4 p.m. arrival The James R. Barker has been loading coal since early morning and should be on her way from MERC to Presque Isle, Michigan by mid-afternoon today as reported earlier. The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Alder has been out most of the day opening up shipping channels along the North Shore and here in the Duluth-Superior harbor.
