Yesterday, NASA's AQUA satellite was passing over the western Great Lakes area and produced a nice image from the NASA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrophotometer (MODIS) device aboard AQUA. http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/realtime/single.php?2009089/crefl2_143.A2009089185500-2009089190000.250m.jpg [warning....large file download 6.7 MB file] Notable..... near shore phytoplankton from Chicago to Stevensville, MI in Lake Michigan. This could potentially be from a thermal bar effect. Saginaw Bay, Western Lake Erie, Southeastern Lake St. Clair, Sandusky Bay and near shore to Cleveland -- heavy turbidity from suspended solids evident and some phytoplankton noted. Still lots of ice in the bays in northern Michigan, Wisconsin and in Lake Superior. Northern Michigan snow cover line plainly visible.
