The Agency for Toxic Substances and Diseases Registry (ATSDR) is holding a meeting on Monday afternoon May 18, 2009 at the University of Toledo, immediately preceding the IAGLR conference. ATSDR is a sister organization to the CDC, although fewer people know about it. They've had a Great Lakes program for about 17 years, and plan to redirect it under the new federal government. This is a stakeholder meeting to discuss that topic. The ATSDR is charged with preventing exposure, adverse human health effects, and diminished quality of life associated with exposure to hazardous substances from waste sites, unplanned releases, and other sources of pollution present in the environment. Congress also mandated ATSDR to conduct the Great Lakes Human Health Effects Research Program (GLHHERP). The GLHHERP characterizes toxic contaminants in the Great Lakes basin and potential short- and long- term health effects associated with exposure to these contaminants. To date, most of the data available on human exposure to Great Lakes contaminants comes from analyses of their levels in drinking water and sport fish. Given the existing research and new and emerging health issues in the Great Lakes basin, ATSDR is seeking guidance on the future direction of the GLHHERP and other potential Great Lakes projects. We anticipate this stakeholders meeting to be the commencement of this discussion. We hope that you will join us for the meeting and will contribute to the discussion. The ATSDR Great Lakes basin guidance meeting will take place on Monday May 18th, 2009 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm at the University of Toledo Student Union SU2592 (free parking). Please RSVP by May 13th to Ms. Nia Murphy (Nmurphy at cdc.gov , 770.488.3674). For additional information, or to discuss your attendance at the meeting, please contact either Steve Dearwent (SDearwent at cdc.gov , 770.488.3665) or Robin Lee at (Rlee3 at cdc.gov , 770.488.3811). We look forward to seeing you in Toledo soon! Sincerely, Dr. Daryl Moorhead Dept.
