Friends of the Crooked River announces the line-up of events for their
19th RiverDay to be held on Saturday May 16^th 2009. This year Friends
of the Crooked River joins the Cuyahoga RAP in celebrating "Year of the
River", a observance of the remarkable progress made in water quality
since the Cuyahoga last caught fire forty years ago. This RiverDay
features eighteen events in Cuyahoga, Summit, Portage and Geauga
counties that comprise the Cuyahoga River watershed. [A complete listing
of the events follows.]
This RiverDay is dedicated to Ed "Citizen" Hauser. In addition to his
many efforts to protect the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie, Ed served as
RiverDay coordinator, for the last five years for Friends of the Crooked
River. Like all community organizations in northeast Ohio, Friends of
the Crooked River celebrates Ed's accomplishments and lament his loss as
an activist and a venerated friend.
RiverDay aims to raise awareness among everyday citizens concerning the
importance of the role that the Cuyahoga plays in their everyday lives
and to highlight the need to continue the improvement of the water
quality of our River. RiverDay events include cleanups, habitat
restoration, canoe paddles, and hikes that feature the numerous
recreational, cultural and historical natural resources of our American
Heritage River. All events are free, although some require
reservations. A complete list is available at www.cuyahogariver.net

Friends of the Crooked River is a grassroots advocacy group dedicated to
the Cuyahoga River. It was established in 1990 to create a vocal
constituency for the River, to expand public awareness of the vast
benefits of River and to advocate for full attainment of the fishable,
swimmable standards of the Clean Water Act. Friends of the Crooked
River/ /works with groups and individuals to further achieve these goals.
The Cuyahoga River acquired notoriety in 1969 when it caught fire. The
fire and the consequential cleanup have made our River a poster child
for the Clean Water Act. In 1998, President Clinton named the Cuyahoga
one of thirteen National Heritage Rivers.* *
