Historic Breakthrough on Auto Mileage Standards
NWF Says Auto Revolution Will Spur Deep Cuts in Global Warming
Pollution

Washington, DC (May 19, 2009) – Today the White House is issuing new
national greenhouse gas and fuel economy standards for cars and trucks.
These standards will deliver the benefits of California's stronger
standards nationwide. Additionally, California expects to receive its
long awaited waiver from EPA early this summer. The auto industry and
key governors are supporting the plan, particularly because is creates
one standard for all states.

Zoe Lipman, Midwest regional senior manager for global warming at the
National Wildlife Federation, said:

“Americans want real and positive change, and President Obama is
delivering. The harmonized national fuel economy rules announced
Tuesday achieve deep greenhouse gas emissions cuts from autos. The rules
will realize the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Mass. v. EPA, and
resolve decades of conflict between environmentalists, governors and the
auto industry.

“The plan and the coalition that backs it is deeply significant and
showcases the momentum for real change. Better gas mileage will fuel our
energy independence and deploy American ingenuity to help solve the
climate crisis. It will also help rescue the American auto industry’s
global leadership and helps put Americans to work building world class
cars that can compete and win.

“We all have a stake in building clean, innovative globally competitive
cars and trucks. The economic benefits go beyond breaking our addiction
to oil. As we transform the US auto industry we drive next generation
green jobs throughout our manufacturing, electronics, and high tech
supply chain. Today’s announcement is a critical step in our economic
and environmental recovery plan.”

“Getting there requires strong vehicle emission rules like those just
announced, and a national climate policy that caps greenhouse gas
pollution and invests in transforming our industrial, transportation and
energy sectors for the long term.”

“Transforming the auto sector, by itself, is a critical part of
cutting greenhouse gas pollution. But the next generation of vehicles
is also be part of broader energy revolution. If we implement vehicle
electrification, a smart electric grid and investments in wind and solar
together -- they get us cleaner vehicles and cleaner electricity sooner
than if they are implemented separately.”

“Just as importantly, the broad group announcing this agreement in
Washington this afternoon effort shows massive momentum in all sectors
of the nation for repowering America while addressing the climate
crisis.”
