Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative

Last week, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack
announced the selection of 41 watersheds in 12 states to participate in the
"Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative" - a new project to
improve water quality and the overall health of the Mississippi River Basin.
The selected watersheds cover over 42 million acres, or more than 5 percent
of the Basin's land area. Visit the USDA web site for the media

EPA Urged to Set Wisconsin Water Nutrient Limits or Face Law Suit

A coalition of environmental groups has notified the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) of their intention to sue EPA unless it promptly
sets legal limits for the nutrients phosphorus and nitrogen in Wisconsin
state waters. Two law firms, the Environmental Law & Policy Center, and
Midwest Environmental Advocates, filed the notice with EPA. The 60-day
notice of intent to sue follows the resolution of a similar case earlier
this month between environmental groups and EPA regarding contamination in
Florida waters. The full story is covered in a news article
<http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/news/71962717.html> by the Milwaukee Journal
Sentinel.

Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference

On December 6-9, the 2009 Midwest Fish and Wildlife
<http://www.dnr.state.il.us/Midwest/index.htm> Conference will be held at
the Hilton Hotel, 700 East Adams Street, Springfield, Illinois.

The purpose of the conference is to share new research, management
experiences, and valuable insight on fish and wildlife issues. Conference
organizers say that it is the "premier fish and wildlife conference in the
central U.S., with more than 1,000 attendees at past conferences."

New Partners for Smart Growth Conference

The annual New Partners for <http://www.newpartners.org/> Smart Growth
Conference will be held February 4-6, 2010, at the Washington State
Convention and Trade Center, 800 Convention Place, in Seattle, Washington.

The program will include the latest research, cutting-edge implementation
tools and techniques, best practices, model projects, policies and codes,
coordinated networking activities, interactive learning experiences, and new
partners. The even offers the opportunity to network and coordinate with
peers as well as practitioners from many different disciplines.
