Alliance for the Great Lakes FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009 CONTACT: Jamie Cross: 616-550-0817 jcross at greatlakes.org Register Now for Saturday's Adopt-a-Beach Cleanup Thousands are expected to converge on Great Lakes beaches this Saturday, Sept. 19, for the Alliances annual September Adopt-a-Beach cleanup. The Alliance hopes to build on last year's record-breaking participation of 6,191 volunteers in three states, an increase of 2,000 participants -- or nearly 50 percent -- from the prior years total. "In contrast to stories of job losses and belt-tightening, the September Adopt-a-Beach event is something everyone can do to help their communities and themselves, said Jamie Cross, acting manager of the Alliances Adopt-a-Beach program. Dates and times for the event which is part of the International Coastal Cleanup and will take place in Michigan, Illinois and Indiana -- may vary depending upon location. Volunteers are encouraged to check the Alliances registration website for up-to-date information. At a time when nonprofits across the country face dwindling resources, Cross said the Alliance appreciates more than ever volunteers help in safeguarding the Great Lakes. Those efforts last year cleared away nearly 25,000 pounds of trash from 185 locations in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. Adopt-a-Beach volunteers also collected and entered data into a regional database the Alliance uses to identify the most common types of beach litter, and which forms the basis of an educational campaign to discourage public littering on beaches. Our volunteers not only clear our shorelines of ugly and potentially harmful debris, said Cross. With each event they show their growing commitment to the Adopt-a-Beach program and the lakes.
