World Bank Report Calls for Climate Action

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Developing countries can shift to lower-carbon paths while promoting development and reducing poverty, but this depends on financial and technical assistance from high-income countries, according to a new World Bank report released Tuesday. High-income countries also need to act quickly to reduce their carbon footprints and boost development of alternative energy sources to help tackle the problem of climate change.

"The latest and best scientific evidence suggests that at global warming of more than 2°C above pre-industrial temperatures, more than a billion people could face water scarcity, 15 to 30 percent of species worldwide could be doomed to extinction, and hunger will rise, particularly in tropical countries," said SNRE Dean Rosina M. Bierbaum, co-director of the World Development Report 2010: Development and Climate Change. See Report: <http://www.worldbank.org/wdr2010>
