Canadian and American students in grades 6-12 have until 11:59 p.m.
Wednesday, September 30, 2009 to submit digital photographs and essays
for the IJC Great Lakes Reflections contest. Twelve iPods will be
awarded to the prize-winning digital photos and essays. Middle (grades
6-8) and high-school students (grade 9-12) will compete separately.

The contest is part of the International Joint Commission's (IJC's)
upcoming 2009 Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement Biennial Meeting to be
held October 7-8, 2009 in Windsor Ontario (see http://meeting.ijc.org).
The middle and the high school students awarded first prize in digital
photography and essay writing will each receive an iPod Touch.
Second-prize winners will receive an iPod Nano and third-prize winners
will receive an iPod Shuffle. Contest rules and entry forms can be
found at  http://meeting.ijc.org/reports/student.

To enter, students should create and submit an original essay or digital
photograph on one, several or all the following Great Lakes themes:

*         Chemicals of Emerging Concern

*         Eutrophication

* Benefits and Risks of Consuming Great Lakes Fish

* Binational Rapid Response to Aquatic Invasive Species

* Beaches and Recreational Water Quality

"Student overviews" to introduce students to these subjects are found on
the website. The IJC hopes the overviews will inspire students to think
about these important issues through the eyes of an artist and words of
a writer. The overviews stimulate questions such as "Can I eat the
fish?", "Can I drink the water", "Can I stop aquatic invasive species?"
and "Can I re-think the Great Lakes?".

Students may develop entries inside or outside of school, but must
submit his or her essay or digital photo by the deadline of 11:59PM,
Wednesday, September 30th. All entries are judged on artistic merit,
creativity and interpretation of the theme(s). The IJC will notify the
contest winners who will then receive international recognition during a
luncheon ceremony on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at the 2009 Biennial
Meeting in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. However, students do not need to
be present to win.

Please feel free to circulate this contest announcement to other
students, school administrators and groups.
