A wonderful cross-section of people and organizations from throughout
the Great Lakes Basin have already registered for the IJC's 2009
Biennial Meeting next week Wednesday Oct 7 and Thursday Oct 8. For
those not yet registered, we hope you do so soon by clicking "register
now" at: http://meeting.ijc.org. There is no charge for registration and
only a $15 CDN charge for lunch each day.

This year's program includes many opportunities for public discussion.
On Wednesday, the discussions will be on the six 2007-09 Priorities
during two-hour workshops. The workshops will focus on learning what is
important to the public about the six current Priority topics:

*the nearshore

*eutrophication

*the benefits & risks of Great Lakes fish consumption

*chemicals of emerging concern

*beaches & recreational water quality

*binational rapid-response to AIS

The Priority reports are available for downloading in English and French
at http://meeting.ijc.org/reports. Printed copies will be available at
registration. You can also follow blogs and post comment on these
topics at http://meeting.ijc.org/blogs.

Thursday morning we will hear from senior government officials in Canada
and the United States on their binational efforts to restore and protect
the Great Lakes. There will be time for public dialogue with these
officials, and then the Commissioners will take your comments. What the
Commissioners learn from you during the meeting and on the blogs will
help inform their 15th Biennial Report to governments in 2010.

Highlights of this year's Biennial include keynote speakers:

*Cameron Davis of U.S. EPA will tell us about the $475 million Great
Lakes Restoration Initiative that is winding its way through Congress as
part of the President's budget (on Wednesday)

*Dr. James Bruce, as one of the original authors of the 1972 Great Lakes
Water Quality Agreement, will give us a behind-the-scenes look at how
the Agreement came into being (on Wednesday)

*Dr. Peter Gleick, a world expert on freshwater and MacArthur "genius"
award winner, will share his thoughts on "Rethinking Water for the 21
Century" (on Thursday)

Complimentary Wednesday evening events for registered guests are:

*A networking reception at the Art Gallery of Windsor with food and
beverage from within 100 miles/160 kilometers of Windsor

*Evening double-feature showing of Mysteries of the Great Lakes and
Waterlife
