A wonderful cross-section of people and organizations from throughout the Great Lakes Basin have already registered for the IJC's 2009 Biennial Meeting next week Wednesday Oct 7 and Thursday Oct 8. This year's program includes many opportunities for public discussion. On Wednesday, the discussions will be on the six 2007-09 Priorities during two-hour workshops. The workshops will focus on learning what is important to the public about the six current Priority topics: *the nearshore *eutrophication *the benefits & risks of Great Lakes fish consumption *chemicals of emerging concern *beaches & recreational water quality *binational rapid-response to AIS The Priority reports are available for downloading in English and French at http://meeting.ijc.org/reports. Printed copies will be available at registration. You can also follow blogs and post comment on these topics at http://meeting.ijc.org/blogs. Thursday morning we will hear from senior government officials in Canada and the United States on their binational efforts to restore and protect the Great Lakes. There will be time for public dialogue with these officials, and then the Commissioners will take your comments. What the Commissioners learn from you during the meeting and on the blogs will help inform their 15th Biennial Report to governments in 2010. Highlights of this year's Biennial include keynote speakers: *Cameron Davis of U.S. EPA will tell us about the $475 million Great Lakes Restoration Initiative that is winding its way through Congress as part of the President's budget (on Wednesday) *Dr. James Bruce, as one of the original authors of the 1972 Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, will give us a behind-the-scenes look at how the Agreement came into being (on Wednesday) *Dr. Peter Gleick, a world expert on freshwater and MacArthur "genius" award winner, will share his thoughts on "Rethinking Water for the 21 Century" (on Thursday) Complimentary Wednesday evening events for registered guests are: *A networking reception at the Art Gallery of Windsor with food and beverage from within 100 miles/160 kilometers of Windsor *Evening double-feature showing of Mysteries of the Great Lakes and Waterlife U.S. visitors will need a valid passport, Passport Card and/or an Enhanced Michigan Driver's LicensePassport Card, and/or an Enhanced Driver's License when crossing into Canada (find travel information at http://meeting.ijc.org/about/).
