Background: The Muskegon Lake restoration project is one of 50 high quality,
high priority projects funded around the nation's coasts by the Obama
Administration's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to restore
coastal habitat and help jumpstart the nation's economy. NOAA selected these
50 projects from a pool of 814 proposals, totaling more than $3 billion in
requests. Under the Recovery Act, NOAA was provided $167 million for marine
and coastal habitat restoration. The Thursday morning celebration takes
place as the NOAA administrator, Dr. Jane Lubchenco, and key partners and
supporters of the Muskegon Lake project come together to celebrate Earth Day
and the jobs created by Recovery Act funding.
