The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Coastal and
Estuarine Land Conservation Program (CELCP) has selected five new projects
in the Great Lakes region to be funded through the Great Lakes Restoration
Initiative (http://greatlakesrestoration.us/). The $4.75M funding will help
protect more than 1,600 acres of coastal watersheds on Lakes Erie, Michigan,
and Superior.

The awards will help acquire, or put under easement, coastal areas on Lakes
Erie, Michigan, and Superior that might otherwise be altered by development.

CELCP helps states and communities preserve threatened coastal areas that
have exceptional ecological, historical, and recreational value, and natural
beauty. Since 2002, CELCP has provided for the permanent protection of more
than 4000 acres of Great Lakes Coastal Habitat. CELCP grants are competitive
and matched one to one with non-federal funding.

The 2010 Great Lakes CELCP projects funded through GLRI are:

*Wisconsin *

   - Houghton Falls project. 77 acres along the south shore of the Bayfield
Peninsula, including more than 2,200 feet of Lake Superior shoreline, to
protect ecological values and provide public recreation
   - Mashek Creek Acquisition. 27 acres along the shores of Lake Michigan,
for ecological values, nature-based recreation, and education.

*Michigan*

   - Bete Grise Wetlands Acquisition project. 1,475 acres adjacent to the
Bete Grise Preserve, part of a broader effort to protect an
ecologically-significant wetland complex along Lake Superior

*Ohio*

   - Kelleys Island Preserve. 18 acres of rare red cedar forest habitat on
Kelleys Island, the largest American Island in Lake Erie, adjacent to the
   Kelleys Island State Park
   - Lake Erie Bluff Preservation project. 95 acres, including a contiguous
portion of undeveloped natural habitat along the shore of Lake Erie. * *

The GLRI funding for the Great Lakes CELCP projects is part of NOAA’s
contribution to the GLRI habitat protection and restoration action plan
objective.

President Barack Obama has committed to making Great Lakes restoration a
national priority. The Great Lakes provide drinking water to over 30
million Americans and support a multi-billion dollar economy. Since
February 2009, President Obama has proposed significant funding as part of
his Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the most significant investment in
the Great Lakes in two decades.

NOAA’s mission is to understand and predict changes in the Earth’s
environment, from the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun, and to
conserve and manage our coastal and marine resources. Visit us on
