Michigan Sea Grant Welcomes New Specialists

Michigan Sea Grant will welcome two new team members at the start of the new year. Amy Samples has accepted the Community Outreach Coordinator position, based at Michigan Sea Grant’s University of Michigan (U-M) School of Natural Resources and Environment Ann Arbor office. Sandra Enness has accepted the position of Communications Manager for Michigan Sea Grant Extension. She will be located at Michigan Sea Grant’s Michigan State University (MSU) office in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife.

Amy Samples
Amy will provide project coordination, communication and outreach on a variety of Great Lakes topics. She will work with a number of collaborators in the Great Lakes region, including marina industry representatives, on the education and outreach project managed by the EPA.

“A focus of this position will be coordinating efforts related to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Green Marina grant project,” said Elizabeth LaPorte, Co-Principal Investigator for the project and Director of Communications and Education Services for Michigan Sea Grant. “We are excited to have Amy as part of our team to interface with project partners in Ohio and Wisconsin and coordinate reports for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).”

Amy earned a master’s degree in 2010 from the U-M School of Natural Resources and Environment, focusing on Natural Resources and Environment, Environmental Policy and Planning and Aquatic Sciences. In addition, she was a Doris Duke Conservation Fellow, and currently works for the Huron River Watershed Council. She has experience in both communications and outreach, including producing web-based content and articles, as well as serving as point of contact for the Chesapeake Bay Initiative.

Sandra Enness
Sandra’s primary duties will involve support for Sea Grant Extension efforts, including distilling program accomplishments and working with the MSU Agriculture and Natural Resources Communications Services group. As part of the Sea Grant Extension program, Sandra will work with extension educators, located in Michigan’s coastal counties, as well as government and non-government representatives.

“We are excited about having Sandra on board. She brings a wealth of communication experience at MSU to the position,” said Chuck Pistis, Sea Grant Extension program coordinator. “Sandra will provide communication support for Sea Grant Extension educators by increasing awareness of Michigan Sea Grant.“

Previously, Sandra worked for the MSU National Food Safety & Toxicology Center. She developed and managed all aspects of communications and public relations campaigns, including the Anti-Counterfeiting and Product Protection Program, the Microbiology Research Unit and the Packaging for Food and Product Protection Initiative. Enness is currently working on a Master’s degree in Public Health. She has experience in website and publication development.
