President’s Budget Recognizes Importance of Great Lakes Even in
Difficult Economic Times

ANN ARBOR, MICH. (February 1, 2010)—President Obama today released his
budget, which contains $300 million for the president’s Great Lakes
Restoration Initiative. Last year, the president funded the
precedent-setting initiative at $475 million.

The Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition is analyzing President
Obama’s budget and will hold a detailed briefing on Wednesday, February
3, at 11:30 AM.

Reacting to the Obama Budget, Jeff Skelding, campaign director for the
Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition, said today:

“The President’s budget recognizes that even in difficult times the
Great Lakes are essential to our nation’s economic and environmental
health.

“The level of funding that the President committed indicates that he
understands the plight of the Great Lakes and the urgency to do
something about it.

“This is not the amount of funding we had hoped for, but coupled with
this year’s historic investment, the President’s request will continue
to advance Great Lakes restoration and economic recovery.

“The need for increased Great Lakes restoration funding remains high,
and we look forward to working with President Obama and the U.S.
Congress to increase funding to restore the Great Lakes and fulfill the
President’s $5 billion commitment to restore the largest freshwater
resource in the world.”
