Climate Expert Lonnie Thompson to Speak at Winter Program, Silent Auction February 18, 2010 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE COLUMBUS, OH - Discover what mountains can teach us about global climate change at the Friends of Stone Laboratory and Ohio Sea Grant 12th Annual Winter Program and Silent Auction, to be held from 7 to 9 p.m. March 2, 2010, at the Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Road on the Ohio State University campus. Dr. Lonnie Thompson, one of the world's foremost authorities on paleoclimatology and glaciology, will speak on "Global Climate Change: A Paleoclimate Perspective from the World's Highest Mountains." Thompson has led 56 expeditions in the last 30 years, conducting ice core drilling programs in the world's Polar Regions, as well as in 16 countries on tropical and subtropical ice fields. Recently, Thompson and his team developed lightweight solar-powered drilling equipment to acquire histories from ice fields in the high Andes of Peru and on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The Silent Auction will begin at 7 p.m. and continue throughout the program. All funds raised will benefit the programs and scholarships of Stone Laboratory, the nation's oldest freshwater biological field station, located at Put-in-Bay on Gibraltar Island, OSU's island campus on Lake Erie. Payment will only be accepted by cash or check. "This fun and informative event is a great place for people to learn about our courses and research, how to join the Friends of Stone Lab, or simply get their Lake Erie questions answered," said Dr. Jeff Reutter, Director of Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab. "It's also a great opportunity to learn more about climate change from one of the world's true experts." Information will be available regarding Stone Lab courses, as well as field trip opportunities for students in grades 4-12 and adults. Stone Lab merchandise will also be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting Stone Lab scholarships.
