**Title**: *Using environmental DNA (eDNA) to elucidate the Asian carp
invasion front*

Managing rare species, whether they are endangered native species or
recently introduced invasive species, requires detection of populations
at low densities. Our recent work demonstrates the usefulness of a novel
detection tool, molecular surveillance using environmental DNA (eDNA),
to more accurately describe the invasion fronts of two species of Asian
carp in Chicago-area canals and waterways. To date we have analyzed over
1100 water samples from throughout the Chicago area for presence or
absence of Asian carp eDNA. Positive detections for the invasive species
have been found throughout the sampled region. Additionally, targeted
eDNA from Asian carp has been detected on numerous sampling trips north
of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Aquatic Nuisance Species Barrier.
Quantitative comparisons with traditional fisheries surveillance tools
illustrate the greater sensitivity of eDNA, and reveal the impending
risk of invasion to the Laurentian Great Lakes by bighead and silver
Asian carp. Environmental DNA provides a novel surveillance approach for
nonindigenous aquatic species. This tool has the ability to detect
nonnative species such as bighead and silver carp at low densities where
traditional tools have been shown to fail. Future studies will
investigate the applicability of eDNA surveillance for other species,
including threatened and endangered organisms in aquatic environments.
