Lake Michigan Forum to Host Public Seminar on Aquatic Invasive Species Forum hopes to leverage the publics interest in the arrival of Asian carp and re-focus the attention on the broader issue and impacts from all aquatic invasive species. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Chicago, April 29, 2010: The Lake Michigan Forum is hosting a public seminar, titled The Rise of Aquatic Invasive Species in the Lake Michigan Basin. The seminar will provide an historic overview of aquatic invasive species in Lake Michigan, a discussion of the economic, social, and ecological impacts, and a look at the impact of climate change on the spread of aquatic invasive species. The seminar is being held in Sams Town Ballroom A at the Blue Chip Hotel & Conference Center in Michigan City, Indiana on May 12, from 6 to 7:30 pm. There is no cost to attend the event, although an RSVP is appreciated. The seminar will feature Phil Moy, aquatic invasive species specialist at the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute, and Doug Keller, aquatic invasive species coordinator for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Aquatic invasive species are one of the leading causes of degraded ecological condition and ecosystem services in the Lake Michigan basin. Although Asian carp has dominated the headlines recently, it is just another species amongst the long list of aquatic invasive species that have impacted the Lake Michigan basin over the last 50 years. Adding to the problem is climate change, which has the potential to exacerbate the impacts of invasive species on native ecosystems. Thus, the objective of this seminar is to leverage the publics interest in the arrival of Asian carp and re-focus the publics attention on the broader issue and impacts from all aquatic invasive species. The Lake Michigan Forum is a medium for direct involvement in the Lake Michigan Lakewide Management Plan process from representative stakeholders of the Lake Michigan basin and provides public input to U.S. EPA on the Lakewide Management Plan.
