GLRI supports sediment reduction in the Little Elkhart River watershed
(Indiana)

A kick-off event for a three-year project to install soil conservation
practices to control erosion and reduce sediment in the Little Elkhart River
will be held Monday, October 18, 2010, from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the ParGil
Natural Resources Learning Center. A lunch will be provided as well as a
tour of the project sites. To RSVP for the Oct. 18 event, respond to (260)
463-3471 ext. 3.

The La Grange County Indiana Soil and Water Conservation District recently
received a $190,000 grant for this work from the Great Lakes Commission's
Great Lakes Basin Program for Soil Erosion and Sediment Control. Priority
installation areas are agricultural-based properties directly adjacent to
moving surface waters of the Little Elkhart River system. All sites will
address livestock-induced stream bank damage due to direct, unrestricted
access that has been identified in the watershed management plan.

The La Grange project is one of nine Great Lakes Restoration Initiative
(GLRI) watershed grants totaling more than $4.3 million to reduce sediment
pollution in priority watersheds in the Great Lakes basin. Funding for these
grants -- awarded under the Great Lakes Basin Program for Soil Erosion and
Sediment Control -- is provided by the GLRI under a cooperative agreement
between the Great Lakes Commission and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Natural
Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

The Great Lakes Commission has been involved in the reduction of nonpoint
source pollution, specifically sediment reduction, since 1988. In 1991 the
Commission established the Great Lakes Basin Program for Soil Erosion and
Sediment Control. The program has funded 439 local small-scale projects,
allocating over $15 million to control erosion and sediment. These projects
have reduced soil erosion in the Great Lakes basin by more than 1.6 million
tons and phosphorus loadings by over 1.6 million pounds. Learn more at
