To: Interested Parties From: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District Re: A Sediment Impact Analysis Methods (SIAM) Model Training Workshop for the Whittlesey Creek Watershed I am pleased to invite you (or your representative) to participate in an upcoming technical workshop. This workshop is designed for local stakeholders in the Whittlesey Creek watershed to use the recently completed Sediment Impact Analysis Methods (SIAM) model of the watershed in order to screen restoration scenarios. The technical workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, November 2, 2010, at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center (offices of the Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge). Representatives from the US Army Corps of Engineers Detroit District will be leading introductory sessions on the principles and use of the SIAM sediment model screening tool and showcase several restoration scenarios that have been modeled as part of this work. In cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the USGS, and other partners, the Whittlesey Creek model was designed to determine potential impacts associated with numerous restoration plans that are on-going in the Whittlesey Creek watershed. Based on the potential for habitat restoration and the numerous sediment issues present in the watershed, Whittlesey Creek was identified as a priority for the development of a sediment impact model under Section 516 (e) of the Water Resources Development Act of 1996. This provision calls for the Secretary of the Army to consult/coordinate with the Great Lakes states in developing "a tributary sediment transport model for each major river system or set of major river systems depositing sediment into a Great Lakes federally authorized commercial harbor, channel maintenance project site, or Area of Concern identified under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement." The Great Lakes Commission is providing technical and administrative support to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on this important initiative. For more information on the Great Lakes Tributary Modeling Program, please visit www.glc.org/tributary. The purpose of this local technical workshop is to provide an opportunity for community stakeholders and interested parties to learn how to use the watershed model that has been developed for the Whittlesey Creek watershed. By using model outputs to evaluate various channel or watershed modifications, this tool can assist local decision-makers in improving water quality by minimizing erosion and sedimentation problems in the watersheds. This workshop marks the end of this particular modeling effort and will serve to transfer the technological tools and knowledge back to the watershed communities for its continued use. The workshop will run from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Central on November 2, 2010. The Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is located at: Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center 29270 County Highway G Ashland, WI 54806-9339 Feel free to share this letter and workshop information with other parties who you feel may be interested in participating in this technical workshop. There is no registration fee for the workshop; however, space will be limited and you must RSVP to attend. Please confirm your attendance by contacting Calvin Creech at the US Army Corps of Engineers by phone at 313-226-3002 or email at Calvin.T.Creech at usace.army.mil no later than Wednesday, October 27th. We look forward to seeing you or your representative on November 2nd.
