Great Lakes region calls on Congress to maintain level funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative in FY 2011 The Great Lakes region spoke with a unified voice this week in calling on Congress to maintain level funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) in Fiscal Year 2011. In a letter sent to the Great Lakes Congressional Delegation, 14 regional Great Lakes agencies and organizations emphasized the progress being made in implementing the GLRI and its importance for creating jobs and revitalizing the regional economy. Congress provided $475 million for the GLRI last year and the regional Great Lakes groups are asking for level funding to sustain the Initiative's successful implementation and to build on the substantial investments being made by states, cities, tribes and nongovernmental organizations. The response to the first year of GLRI funding demonstrates the immense unmet need for resources to implement on-the-ground actions that will improve the environment and economy of the Great Lakes region. Nearly 1,400 proposals were submitted during the GLRI's first year, requesting over $1.0 billion. Given the current funding available, however, only 13 percent of the proposed projects will be funded. The complete letter is attached. The agencies and groups co-signing the letter include the Alliance for the Great Lakes, Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority, Council of Great Lakes Fishery Agencies, Council of Great Lakes Industries, Council of Lake Committees, Ducks Unlimited, Great Lakes Commission, Great Lakes Fishery Commission, Great Lakes Metro Chambers Coalition, Great Lakes United, Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition, National Parks Conservation Association, National Wildlife Federation, and the Natural Resources Defense Council.
