In celebration of Coastal Awareness Month this September, take the opportunity to learn more about the Great Lakes or participate in an activity from workshops to beach cleanups. This year marks the twelfth year that Wisconsin celebrates Coastal Awareness Month. Wisconsin Marina Association and Clean Marina Program Workshop, Press Conference, Sail and Meeting Mayor Thad Birmingham (Sturgeon Bay), Mayor Larry MacDonald (Bayfield) and Wisconsin Marina Association (WMA) Chair Jon Kukuk will be hold a press conference in conjunction with a WMA member meeting and Clean Marina Program best management practices workshop on Tuesday, September 21 at the Stone Harbor Resort in Sturgeon Bay. A one hour lunch sail aboard the Harbor Lady will follow the press conference. The purpose of the event is to bring awareness to coastal initiatives that promote boating, the new Wisconsin Clean Marina Program, the WMA and Wisconsin Harbor Towns Association (WHTA) and how these projects benefit Wisconsin's economy, tourism, outdoor recreation and water quality of our Great Lakes. September Adopt-a-BeachTM (Cleanups) In conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy's 2010 International Coastal Cleanup (ICC http://www.oceanconservancy.org/site/PageServer?pagename=icc_home) the Alliance for the Great Lakes (http://www.greatlakes.org<http://www.greatlakes.org/>) will coordinate Lake Michigan and Lake Superior beach cleanups in Wisconsin through the September Adopt-a-BeachTM Program. Beach cleanups will take place either on the official ICC date of Saturday, September 25 or during the week prior to, or after, this date. The September Adopt-a-BeachTM Program is currently registering team leaders and beach sites for cleanup. Water Star Community Designation Intro and Application Workshop Two WCMP sponsored workshops will introduce the Water Star Program (http://www.waterstarwisconsin.org/) to local governments, answer questions and provide application assistance. Water Star Wisconsin is a program designed to honor local governments (cities, villages, towns, and counties) who do outstanding work to provide their communities with safe and abundant groundwater and protection from polluted runoff. Lake Superior Circumnavigation Presentations Full Circle Superior (http://www.fullcirclesuperior.org/) will sponsor two public and two school presentations by expedition team members who successfully circumnavigated Lake Superior in 2010. Team members will cover expedition highlights, research conducted, and outreach to Lake Superior communities in the U.S. and Canada. Presentations will occur in Wisconsin's Lake Superior communities. Just Add Water In its twelfth year the Just Add Water Program is an established multi-disciplinary education and outreach program focusing on Lake Michigan water resources. Milwaukee schoolchildren will learn more about Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes, and will experience hands on beach cleanup education. Dates, times and places coming soon. Wisconsin Great Lakes Chronicle Annually since 2002 the WCMP has produced a publication that informs policy makers and educates the general public on significant initiatives and emerging issues to Wisconsin's Great Lakes coasts. Coastal Grant Workshops In preparation for the 2011-2012 grant cycle, three coastal grant workshops will be held in September to introduce the grant program, application process, funding priorities and provide an opportunity for attendees to discuss potential project proposals with WCMP staff. The workshops will be held on September 2 in Milwaukee, September 8 in Green Bay and September 15 in Ashland.
