About the State Wildlife Grants Program Created by Congress in 2000, The State Wildlife Grants (SWG) Program was established, "...for the development and implementation of programs for the benefit of wildlife and their habitat, including species that are not hunted or fished..." The program is a direct result of the untiring efforts of the now more than 4700 member groups of the Teaming with Wildlife Coalition<http://www.teaming.com/index.htm> (exit DNR). Since its creation, the SWG program has received annual Congressional appropriations that are administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service apportions these funds, using a legislated formula based on human population and geographic area, to fish and wildlife agencies within the States, Territories, and the District of Columbia (States). The Department of Natural Resources (Department) manages Wisconsin's SWG funds. In addition to complying with applicable federal laws and regulations, Congress stipulated that each State fish and wildlife agency that wished to participate in the SWG program must develop a Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy by October 1, 2005. Wisconsin and some other states now refer to the Strategy as a Wildlife Action Plan (Plan). Wisconsin's Wildlife Action Plan was approved by the Natural Resources Board in August 2005 and accepted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in September 2005. State Wildlife Grant funds will be used for projects to help implement the Plan.
