Dear Friends of the Great Lakes:

It is our pleasure to invite you to the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Great
Lakes Commission, to be held in Detroit, Michigan, Oct. 11-12. We are
pleased to be holding our meeting this year in conjunction with Great Lakes
Week in Detroit, which includes meetings of the U.S. EPA, International
Joint Commission, and the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition, among
others.

This is a time of many recent changes and exciting opportunities for the
Great Lakes region, yet we face continuing challenges, not the least of
which are the ever-changing nature of the region's economy and dealing with
threats from a changing climate and invasive species. Among the topics
slated for discussion at the GLC Annual Meeting are the Great Lakes as
engines of economic recovery, Great Lakes ports in the 21st Century, and
lessons learned from algal blooms and dead zones in Lake Erie. Attendees
will also receive updates on the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative,
renegotiation of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, and the proposed
ecological separation of the Mississippi and Great Lakes watersheds to
thwart the spread of Asian carp.

The Great Lakes Commission Annual Meeting will begin at 1 p.m. on Tuesday,
Oct. 11, and conclude at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12. A dinner and boat
tour of the Detroit River restoration is planned for the evening of Oct. 11.
Meeting events will be held at The Westin Book Cadillac Hotel (1114
Washington Blvd.; Detroit, MI 48226). This famous Italian Renaissance-style
hotel, included in the National Register of Historic Places, was the tallest
building in Detroit and the tallest hotel in the world at its completion in
1924. In recent years, the Book Cadillac has been restored to its original
splendor to reclaim its position as Detroit's premier lodging and gathering
destination.

Book your room now! You can register online for the meeting at
www.glc.org/meeting. A block of rooms has been reserved at The Westin Book
Cadillac Hotel at the reduced rate of $134 per night; please reference the
Great Lakes Commission when making your reservation. Contact the Westin Book
Cadillac directly at 1-800-937-8461 to reserve your room by Sept. 19 to get
the reduced rate. Space is limited so early reservations are encouraged!

If you have questions about these events, please contact Tim Eder
(teder at glc.org) or Dave Knight (dknight at glc.org) at 734-971-9135.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you in Detroit in October!
