Recent oil spills have made the risks of oil extraction and use to our 
aquatic ecosystems very clear. What are the real results of these 
accidents and how do they affect us? What can be done to reduce the 
risks in the future? Are there realistic alternatives? We will discuss 
these issues on both a local and global level. Join Steve Hamilton, of 
the Michigan State University W. K. Kellogg Biological Station and 
Andrew Maynard of the University of Michigan School of Public Health as 
we discuss the science and policy resulting from recent events. Steve 
Hamilton was part of the emergency response to the Kalamazoo River oil 
pipeline rupture, and has been a member of the EPA's Environmental 
Advisory Group for that cleanup effort. Andrew Maynard is the Director 
of the U of M's Risk Science Center, and his work includes assessing and 
managing risks to human health and the environment. Prof. Maynard will 
be recently returned from the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he 
chairs the Global Agenda Council on Emerging Technologies. Science Cafés 
are an opportunity to discuss science topics with experts in an informal 
setting. Hors d'oeuvres at 5:30 are followed by a brief presentation at 
6:00 pm, then by discussion. Everyone is welcome and invited to purchase 
additional food and beverages. Participants must be 21 to purchase 
alcoholic beverages.
