SPEAKERS:

Carol Miller<http://glpf.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0e968567289bebfd795b33288&id=ac52791e76&e=fff863c21f>, Chair Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Wayne State University, is a specialist in environmental/hydraulic engineering and has been active in various hydraulics projects and contaminant remediation projects. She has directed pump training programs for major utilities, including the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. Her research has been supported by the NSF, the AWWA, and the EPA, among others.

Jeff Edstrom, Senior Scientist with Environmental Consulting & Technology, Inc., has over 19 years of experience in environmental policy, project management, and regulatory analysis. He is a recognized expert in Great Lakes water quantity policy and management.

Presentation 1:  Real-Time System Optimization for Sustainable Water Transmission and Distribution

Carol Miller is leading a team to develop software that will allow municipal water systems to reduce air pollution and other water use impacts. The team is designing algorithms that automatically direct pumps to operate at times when the electric power grid is supplied by the cleanest available sources of energy, avoiding times when it is supplied by more polluting sources. Water system operators must provide enough water to maintain pressure in the face of daily fluctuating demands.  The team is exploring how to change the timing and distribution of this pumping activity to use less polluting power more efficiently. The team is developing and testing these technologies in Southeast Michigan. The intent is to provide its products to all basin utilities free of charge.

Presentation 2:  Water Use Impacts and Conservation Benefits

Jeff Edstrom is leading a team that is shifting the "less water use is better, more water use is worse" sentiment that drives many water conservation efforts, exploring how water conservation can be used more practically in restoration plans. The team is showing how reducing the impacts of withdrawals, discharges, and corresponding chemical usage and power usage can alleviate environmental problems more effectively than simply calling for reduced use. The team is creating assessment tools, including a tool to estimate carbon reductions associated with water conservation, to identify water conservation benefits that allow practitioners to focus on actions that produce better ecological results.

In 1989, the Governors of the Great Lakes states created the Protection Fund to help them protect and restore their shared natural resources. The Fund is the first private endowment created to benefit a specific ecosystem. It supports the creative work of collaborative teams that test new ideas, take risks and share what they learn. Since its formation, the Fund has made 236 grants and program investments, representing a $59.8 million commitment.
