In a press release yesterday, the Committee of Canadian Advisors to the Great Lakes Fishery Commission expressed their support of Ontario's decision to defer offshore wind turbine projects until further scientific information is collected, analyzed, and impacts assessed. On behalf of the committee, Dr. John Casselman stated, "Wind power on water, like water power, is an important energy resource that should not be developed to the detriment of another valuable and renewable resource - fish and fisheries. Considerable knowledge already exists concerning Great Lakes fish populations and fisheries, but not as it pertains to development of offshore wind installations. Prototype small-scale installations need to be specifically and adequately studied before any full-scale development is undertaken." The release affirms the committee's 2010 resolution calling for a full environmental assessment on a pilot wind turbine project before commercial turbines are placed, and that full environmental assessments are under taken for each and every offshore wind proposal. The full release and resolution are attached. _________________________________________________________ Brent Gibson Director, Communications Great Lakes United 613-482-1324 x509 <mailto:bgibson at glu.org> bgibson at glu.org | <http://www.glu.org/> www.glu.org Join our mailing list: <http://www.glu.org/en/mailinglist> www.glu.org/en/mailinglist Donate today! <http://www.glu.org/join> www.glu.org/join Represented by UAW Local 55 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
