Classification: UNCLASSIFIED Caveats: FOUO Submitted by The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers <Chicagodistrict.PAO at usace.army.mil> www.glmris.anl.gov www.facebook.com/glmris Twitter:@GLMRIS --- Through the National Environmental Policy Act scoping process (http://glmris.anl.gov/involve/whatisscoping/index.cfm), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) invites you to attend a meeting for the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS) to prevent aquatic nuisance species (ANS), such as Asian carp, transfer between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins through aquatic pathways. Your comments will help USACE refine the scope of GLMRIS to focus on significant issues, as well as eliminate issues that are not significant from further detailed study. Issues associated with GLMRIS are likely to include, but will not be limited to: significant natural resources, such as ecosystems and threatened and endangered species; commercial and recreational fisheries; recreational uses of the lakes and waterways; effects of potential ANS controls on waterways uses such as: flood risk management, commercial and recreational navigation; and statutory and legal responsibilities relative to the effected waterways. After the commencement of the first scoping meeting in Chicago on Dec. 15, 2010, USACE has confirmed the venues, dates and times of eleven other public scoping meetings (http://glmris.anl.gov/involve/pubschedule/index.cfm). For GLMRIS, USACE will explore options and technologies, collectively known as aquatic nuisance species controls, that could be applied to prevent ANS transfer between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Basins through aquatic pathways. ANS are nonindigenous species that threaten the diversity or abundance of native species or the ecological stability of infested waters, or commercial, agricultural, aquacultural or recreational activities dependent on such waters.
