FOSL and Ohio Sea Grant's 13th Annual Winter Program and Silent Auction January 21, 2011 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE COLUMBUS, OH-Hear about the deep-sea hunt for lost treasure, bid in the silent auction, and college students can win a Stone Lab scholarship at the Friends of Stone Laboratory (FOSL) and Ohio Sea Grant's 13th Annual Winter Program and Silent Auction. The event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. January 26, 2011, at The Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Road on Ohio State University's (OSU) main campus. Former Ohio Sea Grant Director Dr. Charles E. Herdendorf will speak on "Treasures of a Lost Voyage: Discovery and Exploration of the Gold Rush Steamer SS Central America." Dr. Herdendorf is an OSU professor emeritus of zoology and geology and he served as chief scientist on the Central America Project. Led by a former Stone Lab student, the expedition recovered treasure from the Central America, which sank in 1857. More than 400 passengers and 21 tons of gold were lost. Items available in the Silent Auction will include tickets to cultural activities and sports events, books/literature, meals at fine-dining establishments, items for the home and family, and much more. Only cash and checks can be accepted and all proceeds will benefit Stone Lab's programs and scholarships. FOSL will award door prizes to registered college students and at the end of the evening, FOSL will award a scholarship covering room and meals for one week at Stone Lab during the summer of 2011 ($395 value). These prizes are open only to registered college students at any college or university, but students must be present to win.
