You Are Invited To A Kickoff Celebration for the White Lake Shoreline Habitat Restoration Project July 20 in Whitehall, MI What: A formal kickoff event for the White Lake Shoreline Habitat Restoration Project. Confirmed speakers include Cameron Davis, Senior Advisor to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator, Patty Birkholz, Director of the Michigan Office of the Great Lakes, State Senator Geoff Hansen, State Representative Marcia Hovey-Wright, Jeff Auch, Executive Director of the Muskegon Conservation District, and Ken Mahoney, Chairman of the Muskegon County Commission, and Vice-Chair of the White Lake Public Advisory Council. Led by the Muskegon Conservation District in partnership with the White Lake Public Advisory Council, the US EPA and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, this $2.1 million Great Lakes Restoration Initiative project will restore valuable fish and wildlife habitat at seven public and private sites along the shoreline of White Lake. When completed in September 2012, there will be increased diversity of wetland plants, healthier habitat for fish and wildlife, improved water quality, and more aesthetically pleasing shorelines. It will also address two Beneficial Use Impairments identified for White Lake - Loss of Fish and Wildlife Habitat and Degraded Fish and Wildlife Populations. This 18-month project will help to remove White Lake from the list of Great Lakes Areas of Concern, one of 14 in the State of Michigan.
