On August 26, 2011, the Michigan Chapter Soil and Water Conservation Society will hold their annual Summer Tour in Calhoun County. There are two themes to this tour: Cover Crops and the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP). Tour highlights include: A morning Field Day co-sponsored with MSU Extension, and hosted by Blight Farms, Albion, Michigan, that will tour cover crop demonstration plots planted in July; discuss research results from cover crop plots planted in previous years; and demonstrate slurry seeding (planting cover crop seed along with liquid manure using a low disturbance tillage tool) in wheat stubble in a long term continuous notill field. This will be our first stop. We will join local producers who may be attending this morning portion only. A tour of Blight Farms livestock operation with a focus on MAEAP qualification practices. Blight Farms became MAEAP verified in 2006. They are now working toward their second re-verification. A tour of Albion College's Nancy G. Held Equestrian Center which was MAEAP verified in 2008. First, we will have lunch, catered by Albion College Dining Services, in the Equestrian Center's Arena Viewing Room. Then we will tour the Center with the Center Manager. A tour of Bosserd Family Farm where the Bosserd's are striving to become MAEAP verified for the first time. This will be our last stop before returning to our starting point. The tour is planned to run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will start at the Kmart parking lot near I-69 in Marshall, Michigan. Go to the Michigan Chapter SWCS website for more information and too register. The deadline for registration is August 12. Daniel F.
