NOAA's Center of Excellence for Great Lakes and Human Health has re-launched its weekly forecast bulletin for harmful algal blooms in western Lake Erie on Friday, June 10, 2011. The Lake Erie Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Experimental Forecast Bulletin provides a satellite perspective and modeled estimation of HABs and then provides a 72-hour prediction of location, movement and intensity of several blooms in the Lake based on winds, waves and surface water currents. As of June 9, there are no HABs in Lake Erie. Harmful algal blooms occur when nutrient, temperature and light conditions allow species of blue-green algae like Microcystis to reproduce rapidly. The blooms can foul up coastlines and can produce a toxin, Microcystin, that may be harmful to pets and people upon ingestion or exposure. Children are at higher risk than adults for illness from HABs. Even blooms of non-toxic species can irritate skin.
