Last Wednesday, June 8, a group of 14 paddlers left the lake control structure on northern Houghton Lake to mark the beginning of an eleven day journey down the entire 217 miles of the Muskegon River, Michigan's second longest river. The weather was rough the first few days of the trip and in addition, many trees that were down in the river had to be portaged. The bugs weren't very inviting either. You can read about their journey and about the paddlers at http://www.mrwa.org/VoD.htm The Muskegon River Watershed Assembly has been instrumental in forming a committee to organize the event. They invite the public to join them for a day's travel (the public will need to make their own travel arrangements). The group will be leaving Big Rapids Hemlock Park tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, they'll leave at the same time at Brower's Park (Mecosta County). Thursday, June 16, departure will be at Croton Dam at 8:30 a.m. Friday's departure is at Newaygo's Henning Park at 8:30 a.m. Saturday's departure is at the Maple Island Road access at 8:30 a.m. The group will end their trip on Saturday, June 18, with a Celebration event at Muskegon's Fisherman's Landing at 2:00 p.m. Plan to join the group during the week.
