In the coming months the US Environmental Protection Agency will take action on two critical rulemakings that have significant implications to the health of the Great Lakes: Slashing Mercury Pollution from Coal Fired Power Plants and Restoring Protections for the Nation's Waters under the Clean Water Act.

Right now, National Wildlife Federation needs your help to ensure the EPA finalizes strong mercury and air toxics standards.

TODAY PLEASE TAKE ACTION TO SLASH MERCURY POLLUTION IN THE GREAT LAKES

After decades of delay and inaction, the Environmental Protection Agency has finally proposed new rules to reduce mercury and other toxic pollution from power plants. NWF has long fought for strong regulations to limit mercury emissions, given the grave threat mercury contamination poses to people, wildlife, and the Great Lakes. Here in the Great Lakes, mercury is plaguing the fish and wildlife that support our massive hunting and fishing industries. Mercury advisories show the majority of Great Lakes waterways are affected by mercury accumulation in our fish, making them unsafe to eat and hurting our outdoor recreation economy. Therefore, we are thrilled to see this strong proposal to significantly reduce mercury pollution nationally and in the Great Lakes, but need your help in the coming weeks to ensure it becomes law.
It is critical that EPA hear loud public support for these new regulations given the intense opposition already being voiced from the fossil-fuel industry. Coal-fired power plants are the single largest source of mercury pollution in this country, and many of these plants are located in our backyard here in the Midwest. We need your help to ensure that EPA moves forward and finalizes a strong rule to protect future generations of people and wildlife, and the Great Lakes from toxic mercury.
EPA is accepting comments on their proposed Mercury & Air Toxics rule until July 5th. Here are the ways you can help:
