Coastal protection and restoration grants available

The Office of the Great Lakes in the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality today announced available grants to help coastal communities protect and restore natural resources.

The Coastal Zone Management grant projects focus on planning land use and managing growth for coastal communities, protecting, managing and restoring coastal habitats and restoring historic maritime structures. Other projects include revitalizing urban waterfronts and increasing recreational opportunities along Michigan's Great Lakes coast.
Grants are offered through the Michigan Coastal Management Program on a competitive basis. Eligible applicants are coastal cities, counties, villages and townships, regional planning agencies, conservation districts and other area-wide agencies, state agencies, universities, school districts, tribal governments, and nonprofit organizations.
"The Michigan Coastal Management Program helps communities both protect the beauty of our coast and recognize its economic potential" said Patricia Birkholz, Director of the Office of the Great Lakes.
Coastal Zone Management grants are made available from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration pursuant to the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972.

The application deadline for Coastal Zone Management grant projects is Monday, May 16, 2011. Applications will be reviewed and evaluated by the DEQ and the NOAA, with final decisions anticipated by December 2011. Successful applicants typically will start projects on Jan. 1, 2012.
The Office of the Great Lakes is committed to protecting, restoring, and promoting appropriate, sustainable use of our Great Lakes and Michigan's coastal resources.

The Request for Proposals is available on the Web at www.michigan.gov/coastalmanagement<http://www.michigan.gov/coastalmanagement>, under Grants, and click on Coastal Management Program Grants and Application.
