Think Spring: Help us kick off the Adopt-a-Beach(tm) season!

Gear up to celebrate the coming beach season by taking part in our Adopt-a-Beach(tm) Spring Kickoff, April 20-May 4.

Each year the Alliance for the Great Lakes encourages new and returning Adopt-a-Beach(tm) teams to visit their favorite beach during our spring kickoff event. Contact your state coordinator now (see below) to schedule a date, select a beach and register.

Want to help out at a cleanup near you? Dozens of cleanups are scheduled around the region that are open to the public and looking for volunteers.

Adopt-a-Beach(tm) volunteers -- now numbering more than 10,000 in six Great Lakes states -- pick up trash, conduct water quality sampling and make science-based observations, and record their findings in a regional database.

During the 2010 beach season, our volunteers removed 31,295 pounds of trash from Great Lakes shorelines, translating to just over 3 pounds of trash per person. The cleanups were held at 292 locations in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

In addition to picking up litter, Adopt-a-Beach(tm) teams and volunteers collect data about Great Lakes beaches by conducting water quality tests and making science-based beach observations, information then used to improve beach conditions on a site-by-site basis.

All new and returning Adopt-a-Beach(tm) team leaders are encouraged to attend an Adopt-a-Beach(tm) training before the spring kickoff. Adopters can choose to attend a session either in person or online.

Spring trainings for the returning and first-time beach adopter:

In person: Adopt-a-Beach(tm) data collection forms and protocol are reviewed at each training session, and we also discuss any recent changes and answer questions you may have about the program. See a schedule of training dates organized by state and signup information.

Online: This year we're offering the opportunity to attend a web-based training. To receive an invitation to attend, RSVP to adoptabeach at greatlakes.org.
