Workshops to promote beneficial use of dredged material in Great Lakes
region continue next week in Duluth, Madison

A workshop series to explore approaches to the beneficial use of material
dredged from Great Lakes commercial and recreational harbors and channels
will continue next week in Duluth, Minnesota and Madison, Wisconsin.
Workshops will also be held in April in Toledo and Cleveland. Some 3.3
million cubic yards of sediment is deposited annually in Great Lakes harbors
and channels maintained by the federal government. "Recycling" material
clean enough for beneficial use avoids other, less sustainable methods of
dredged material management such as placement in confined disposal
facilities. The 2 to 2 1/2 hour sessions, facilitated by the Great Lakes
Commission and entitled "Beneficial Use Technology Transfer Workshops," are
designed to energize business communities, and educate permittees and
regulators about beneficial use technologies as well as broaden
understanding and interest in such beneficial use projects as habitat
restoration and brownfield restoration. Discussion will also be held on
overcoming challenges and obstacles to such projects. See the attached
Duluth and Madison workshop agendas for further details.
Workshops will be held at the following locations:

10 a.m. Wednesday, March 23
Meeting/Conference Room
Lake Superior Visitors Center
600 South Lake Avenue
Duluth, Minnesota 55802
(A webinar previously scheduled as part of this meeting will be
rescheduled.)

10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 24
Room 421
Hill Farms State Transportation Building
4802 Sheboygan Avenue
Madison, Wisconsin 53705

10 a.m. Tuesday, April 12
Room 153
Lake Erie Center
6200 Bayshore Road
Oregon, Ohio 43616

A final workshop will be held in Cleveland, Ohio, with time and location to
be announced.

There is no cost to participate in the workshops. Please indicate plans to
attend, however, by contacting Dave Knight, Great Lakes Commission,
dknight at glc.org, 734-971-9135 (office), 734-709-6168 (cell). Preregistration
is particularly necessary for the Madison workshop for building security.
