Great Lakes Colleagues: The registration deadline has been extended to noon on Wednesday, March 23 for those who may be still interested in attending event, Phragmites Invasions in Michigan: A Symposium to Build Capacity for Management. The symposium (March 29-30), organized by the Great Lakes Commission in cooperation with Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources and Dept. of Environmental Quality, promises to be extremely informative on the current state of affairs on the management and control of phragmites in Michigan as well as new directions on managing phragmites into the future. The symposium field trip (Monday, March 28) will provide a unique opportunity to learn about the invasive nature of the non-native strain of phragmites in the ecological context of Lake Lasnsing (County) Park North. Applied management practices/techniques will also be demonstrated during the field trip. There has been a considerable amount of expertise invested in research and management within Lake Lansing to learn more about how to address phragmites invasions in a variety of ecosystems. An important outcome of the overall symposium is a strategic framework to advance phragmites management and control on a state level. The outcomes from the symposium plenary and breakout presentations as well as discussions should provide valuable direction in the development of the strategic framework. The symposium proceedings and strategic framework will be documented on the project website ( <http://glc.org/ans/phragmites/symposium2011.html> http://glc.org/ans/phragmites/symposium2011.html). So its not too late to join us for this event if you register by noon, March 23!
