It was the school's third victory in as many years, a sign of dynasty-building for Marshfield High School and its coach, Paul Herder. The team bested 25 other schools, many in sea-coastal states, losing only one match during the two-day contest that took place in Galveston, Texas. That loss came early in the overall event, during the third round of the five-round "round robin" matches. Marshfield was seeded sixth going into the double elimination, and never lost a game throughout that portion of the competition. The Wisconsin students won against the team from Lexington High School in Massachusetts. Competition between the opponents was intense, but also very friendly, said Jim Lubner. Lubner is the Wisconsin Sea Grant education coordinator and accompanied the team to Texas. Wisconsin Sea Grant provides financial and personnel support for the Lake Sturgeon Bowl, which has taken place for nine years. That state competition is the qualifying arena for the national bowl. It is held in February in Milwaukee. After Sunday's victory, Lubner said, "I was extremely proud of how these fine young people, from both teams, conducted themselves. Every time I attend one of these competitions I am reminded of how bright our future will be if these young people are able to realize their potential as leaders in a diversity of fields." As winners, the Marshfield students also claim a prize of a week-long trip to Puerto Rico this summer, with a visit to the El Junque rain forest, nighttime kayaking on a bioluminescent lagoon and a variety of other activities. The National Ocean Sciences Bowl is in its 11th year. The Consortium for Ocean Leadership - representing leading oceanographic institutions, universities and aquaria - manages the bowl. The competition features questions that build marine and coastal literacy, and includes the fields of chemistry, biology, social sciences, mathematics, physics, geography and ocean-related technology, such as sonar. # # # # Conceived in 1966, Sea Grant is a national network of 32 university-based programs of research, outreach, and education for enhancing the practical use and conservation of coastal, ocean and Great Lakes resources to create a sustainable economy and environment.
