Assessment on Michigan's water use program released for public comment

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality's Office of the Great Lakes has released a report which assesses Michigan's progress in meeting its obligations under the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact.

Each state is legally required under the Compact to submit a periodic review of its water conservation programs to the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence River Water Resources Regional Body.

In December 2010, Michigan adopted water conservation and efficiency goals and objectives consistent with the basin-wide goals and objectives. These goals and objectives were developed by the Water Resources Conservation Advisory Council, a 21-member stakeholder group of executive and legislative appointees.

Michigan Water Conservation and Efficiency Program Review was drafted in consultation with the Departments of Environmental Quality, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Rural Development, and Attorney General.

"Our freshwater resources are critical to our quality of life in Michigan. We must continue to work together to be good stewards and wisely manage our water resources," said Patty Birkholz, Director of the Office of the Great Lakes.

The OGL is seeking comment on Michigan's goals and objectives as part of its public review and will consider modifications to the goals and objectives as indicated by public comment. Written comments should be postmarked or submitted by Feb. 6, 2012 to Frank Ruswick, Office of the Great Lakes, P.O. Box 30473-7973, Lansing, Michigan 48909, or by E-mail to ruswickf at michigan.gov<mailto:ruswickf at michigan.gov>.

The MDEQ is the lead agency responsible for Michigan's water conservation and efficiency program. The Director of the Office of the Great Lakes is the lead contact.
