Passing Away of Dr. Bruce Jones of Grosse Ile, Michigan It is with great sadness that we must inform you that Dr. Bruce Jones passed away on Tuesday evening. Bruce was a long-serving dentist in the Downriver area and a committed conservationist. He made a significant contribution to the Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy, the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, and environmental education and stewardship in schools. For many years he was a key leader and driving force behind the Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy, including habitat restoration at the former Grosse Ile Nature Area (now called the Gibraltar Bay Unit of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge) and an award-winning soft shoreline engineering project along its shoreline. Bruce was instrumental in helping save Humbug Marsh from development and getting it incorporated into the Refuge. He went on to be a founding member of the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance (Friends Group of the Refuge) and always pushed for environmental education for children. He so loved his children and grandchildren, and was always encouraging others to think about future generations. When I think of Bruce, what comes to mind is the well-known quote of Margaret Mead: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. Dr. Bruce Jones was an incredibly thoughtful, committed person who changed Downriver and has left a lasting legacy. We will miss him so much. Please keep his wife and family in your thoughts and prayers! VISITATION: Friday September 23 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM The Trenton Chapel - Martenson Family of Funeral Homes, 3200 West Rd.
