Michigan Sea Grant Supports Record Number of Fellows
Ann Arbor, Mich. – Five students from Michigan universities have been awarded fellowships that focus on coastal, Great Lakes and marine issues. These paid positions help graduate students build professional networks and gain valuable work experience in natural resourcemanagement and policy careers. The fellows are: Cassie Bradley, Liz Durfee, Zach Hecht-Leavitt, Eric MacMillan and Kyle Molton.

“We are happy that Michigan Sea Grant could help five highly qualified graduate students secure fellowships – a record number for us,” said Jim Diana, Michigan Sea Grant Director. “These students will have an excellent opportunity to apply their academic training to real world issues. The internship is their next step in becoming environmental leaders.”

Knauss Marine Policy Fellows
Michigan Sea Grant recommended Kyle Molton and Eric MacMillan for the Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship, and both will begin the prestigious fellowship in January 2012. Molton and MacMillan both recently completed master’s degrees in Michigan State University’s Fisheries and Wildlife Department. During the one-year program, Knauss Fellows work in Washington, D.C. on federal policies and programs related to marine, coastal and Great Lakes issues. In November, the fellows will be paired with a hostoffice after a weeklong interview process. Molton hopes to work in a congressional office researching aquatic issues, communicating with constituents and helping legislators address marine and Great Lakes concerns. MacMillan hopes to focus on fisheries management, seeking a pairing with a federal agency like the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

NOAA Coastal Management Fellows
Liz Durfee and Zach Hecht-Leavitt were awarded NOAA Coastal Management Fellowships. Both recently earned master’s degrees through the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment. During this two-year fellowship, Durfee will team up with Michigan Sea Grant and Michigan’s Coastal Management Program on working waterfronts. Durfee will use her planning background to evaluate waterfront use and help ensure coastal access for a variety of uses, including shipping, commercial fishing and recreation. Hecht-Leavitt’s fellowship assignment began in August and based in Albany, NY. He will use his GIS expertise to support marine spatial planning – a way of thoughtfully divvying up coastal and offshore areas for fishing, oil and gas production, wildlife sanctuaries and other uses.
